What a boom truck quote covers

A boom truck is a truck with a hydraulic crane on the back. It sets up on its outriggers beside the load, picks it and places it, then drives away. For lighter picks that is often all the crane the job needs.

  • The truck and its boom, driven to your site and set up on outriggers.
  • An operator if you want one. Choose operated or bare rental in the form; not every operator offers a bare rental.
  • Rigging and a signalperson if you ask for them. Otherwise your crew rigs the load. See rigging and signalperson.
  • Time on site. Ask whether the price has an hourly or daily minimum.
  • Travel from the operator's yard. Distance to the job can be part of the price.

Boom truck, boom lift or crane

People searching for a boom truck often land on boom lift listings. They are different machines. This is how to tell them apart and when to step up to a bigger crane.

Boom truck compared with machines it is often confused with
MachineWhat it doesPick it when
Boom truckA crane on a truck chassis. Hangs a load from a hook and places it.The load and reach are modest: poles, pipe, pumps, HVAC units, signs.
Knuckle boom truckA boom with joints that fold, so it can reach over or around obstacles. The set point is awkward to reach. Ask the operator which boom suits it.
Mobile craneA larger crane with a longer reach and more capacity. The load or the distance goes beyond what a boom truck can do. The operator checks the load chart.
Boom liftAn aerial work platform that raises people and tools. It does not hang loads from a hook.A worker needs to get up to a wall, light or sign. This is not a crane.

On price: boom lifts listed in Elko by BigRentz run from about $212 a day for a 30 ft electric lift to about $1,196 a day for a 125 ft diesel dual-fuel lift. That is a typical market range for lifts, not a crane rate and not our price. A boom truck is quoted by the operator from your load, reach and site.

When a boom truck is enough

Utilities, electrical contractors and fabricators are the usual buyers. If the load is lighter and the truck can get close to the set point, a boom truck is a sensible first thing to ask for.

  • Setting and replacing poles, where overhead power lines are common. Tell the operator.
  • Pipe laid in a trench or stacked at a yard.
  • Pump and motor swaps at plants and shops.
  • Rooftop HVAC units. See rooftop HVAC and steel lifts.
  • Signs, light poles and fabricated parts delivered to site.
  • Loads that turn out heavier than expected: the operator may move you up to a truck crane or mobile crane.

What to have ready

This is what the operator asks first. Rough numbers are fine; "not sure" is a fine answer and the operator will ask follow-up questions or come and look.

Rules on the job

Operator certification

OSHA's crane rule for construction (29 CFR 1926.1427) requires crane operators to be certified or licensed through an accredited testing organization. NCCCO is the most common route. Certification is specific to crane type and capacity, so ask the operator for the card that matches the boom truck on your job.

Power lines

Tell the operator about any overhead lines near the lift; the form asks. The operator decides whether the lift can go ahead and what that takes. Do not pre-position poles or loads under lines before the operator has seen the site.

Site rules

Plants, construction sites and mines each set their own entry and lift requirements. Ask your site contact before the quote and pass the answer on. For mines, see mine site lifts.

Boom truck questions

All questions

Is a boom truck the same as a boom lift?

No. A boom truck is a crane on a truck and hangs loads from a hook. A boom lift is an aerial work platform that raises a person or tools. If you need to lift a load, ask for a boom truck or a crane; if a worker needs to reach a height, ask for a boom lift from an equipment rental yard.

When do I need a mobile crane instead of a boom truck?

When the load or the reach is beyond what a boom truck can handle. The operator checks your numbers against the crane's load chart, and capacity falls as reach grows. Send the heaviest load and the distance to the set point and the operator will say which machine fits.

Does a boom truck come with an operator?

You can ask for one in the form. Some operators also rent a boom truck bare to a customer with a qualified operator, but not all do, and the quote will say.

What certification should the boom truck operator have?

For construction work, OSHA's crane rule (29 CFR 1926.1427) requires a certified or licensed operator, and NCCCO is the most common route. Certification is specific to crane type and capacity. Ask the operator for the card and whether it covers the truck on your job.

How much does boom truck rental cost in Elko?

We haven't confirmed an Elko boom truck rate, so we don't publish one. The price depends on the truck, hours on site, travel, rigging and site requirements, and each operator quotes from your details. The boom lift prices above are for lifts, not boom trucks.

Can a boom truck work near power lines?

Sometimes, but it is the operator's call after seeing the site. Say so in the form so the quote reflects it. Never assume a line is dead or far enough away.
