What a mine site quote covers

A mine lift is a normal crane job with extra paperwork. The quote should cover the crane, the crew and what it takes to get both through the gate.

  • The crane and its operator, matched to the load, the reach and the ground.
  • A crew with the training your site requires. Tick "MSHA-trained crew" in the form and say what else the gate checks.
  • Rigging and a signalperson if you ask for them. See rigging and signalperson.
  • Travel to the site. Mine roads can be a long way from the operator's yard, and that can show up in the price.
  • Time on site, including waiting at the gate or for an escort if the mine requires one.

Which machine for a mine lift

The operator picks from the load, the reach and the ground. Mine pads and roads often rule out a road crane, which is why rough terrain and all-terrain cranes come up so often here.

The lifts mines ask for

Mines around Carlin are run by Nevada Gold Mines, and job postings there ask for process maintenance mechanics, drill and shovel technicians and underground miners. Maintenance work at that scale involves heavy parts that need lifting. We are not affiliated with any mine; this is the kind of work operators quote.

  • Pump and motor installs and swaps at processing plants and shops.
  • Mine equipment rigging during planned maintenance.
  • Pipe setting for water and process lines.
  • Tanks, skids and generators set on pads.
  • Lifts on remote pads that need an off-road crane.

What to have ready

Mines move faster when the paperwork arrives with the request. Rough numbers are fine for the lift itself; the site questions are worth getting right.

Rules on the job

MSHA training

Surface mines fall under MSHA's 30 CFR Part 48. Crew who work on site need 24 hours of new miner training for surface operations and an 8-hour refresher every year, plus the mine's site-specific hazard training. Training providers offer online courses for contractors that cover the mandatory subjects. Check the current rules and timing with your mine's safety contact.

The mine sets the rules

Gate details, escort, working hours, lift plans, insurance and which cards the gate checks are the mine's decision. Ask your site contact before the quote and put the answers in the form. We can't confirm what any operator holds, so ask them for the records.

Operator certification

NCCCO is the most common crane-operator certification, and it is specific to crane type and capacity. Whether a mine asks for it is its own call. Ask the site and the operator, and have the card ready to show at the gate.

Mine site lift questions

All questions

Can I get a crew with MSHA training?

Ask for it in the form. Operators say whether their crew can meet the training your mine requires, and the quote should list what they will bring. We don't hold or verify any operator's training records, so ask to see them.

Who decides what the crew needs at the gate?

The mine. MSHA sets the training floor under Part 48, but each mine adds its own site-specific training, escort, hours and paperwork. Your site contact can tell you what the gate checks.

Do I need a lift plan?

Mines and general contractors often ask for one on heavy or complex picks. Ask your site's safety contact before you request the quote and pass the answer on, so the operator can price the planning.

Can a crane get to a remote mine pad?

Often, with the right machine. Rough terrain and all-terrain cranes are built for gravel pads and rough roads, and the form asks about ground and access. Describe the road and the pad as well as you can.

Does Elko Crane Rental work for the mines?

No. We are a quote-request service. We pass your lift details to independent local operators, who quote you directly, and we don't own cranes or perform lifts.

Do contractors need training before arriving on site?

Mine operators generally want records before you reach the gate. Online courses for contractors cover the mandatory subjects, followed by the mine's own site-specific training. Confirm the exact requirements and timing with the mine, as sources differ.
